Sessions that make learning
effective and enjoyable
My approach is anything but cookie-cutter.
After more than 20 years of tutoring, I’ve honed instruction methods that are proven to be effective. My sessions are designed to accommodate various learning styles.
I know the curriculum inside out, and can provide a wide variety of practice tests to help you prepare for unit exams, and extensive review packages to help you prepare for finals.
Sessions are two students for one hour.
I work back and forth between students. After explaining concepts and demonstrating a few examples, I let one student try a couple of questions while assisting the other student.
Two-student sessions allow each student to work through their questions at their own pace. This frees them from performance anxiety that can sometimes occur when being watched. It also encourages students to assume some independence and responsibility for their own work.
If you want to work with a friend, please let me know and I will try and book you together!
Rich can help with time management, study habits, and
organizational skills.
“Maybe I’ll just study harder,” you might say. Yes, studying is always a good idea. But a tutor can help you study smarter, not just harder.

What students and parents say
“Michael and I want to thank you very much for all of the math support and guidance you have given to Heather and Mark! Both of them have benefited tremendously from your expertise and helpfulness. You definitely have made the difference in them passing or failing their math courses. We know that Mark and Heather have appreciated and enjoyed working with you immensely.
” Michael & Lynne, Parents
“Thank you for your patience, tolerance, and expertise as my chem tutor. You are a fabulous teacher, and I don’t know what would have happened to my grades without you.
” Jane, Student
“Thanx for all your help this year. You made calculus bearable!
” Alison, Student
“Thank you so much for all of your help over the years! I have always been able to rely on you and you have been a great mentor!
” Heather, Student
“I just wanted to say thank you very much for all the help this semester. I ended up with a 70% which I was pretty happy with, especially since I was at about a 60% before the exam. So I guess all that extra study time for finals helped a lot!
” Jessica, Student
“Thank you so much for all your help! You make math exciting! Really.
” Heather, Student
“Thank you for all the great help you gave Emily in her math 30 and math 31 studies. She is off to Queens in Kingston in September and we just wanted you to know that you helped her get there! Many Thanks!
” Ann, Parent
“Thank you so much for your patience and guidance as a math tutor. You have done a wonderful job with Rory. He is more knowledgeable and confident. We sincerely appreciate your efforts.
” Sheilah, Parent
“Neil passed his Math course rewrite exam. Your expertise and approaches raised his mark 20 percent. Thanks for accepting him in to your tutoring under short notice.
” Dave, Parent
“I just wanted to say thank you so much for all of your help and for putting up with me this semester! I passed with flying colours. Hardest exam I have ever written though… also the most dramatic: many students started crying during the exam, two people got up and walked out, and many others swore at the prof as he walked past. It was a little crazy. However, the class average was 52% and I scored a 75%!
” Morgan, Student
“Thank you very much for all the help these past three years. High school would not have been as smooth without your tutoring. I really enjoyed all of our sessions and your tutoring really was a large part in making my high school experience so positive.
” Kate, Student
I see many students who fear or hate math.
Many students simply need more time to fully digest and understand their course work. Tutoring sessions provide you with focused attention on terminology and concepts — and immediate feedback as you work through practice problems.
Meet Rich Mawson
I’m a Calgarian who attended H.D. Cartwright junior high and Sir Winston Churchill high school, followed by a BComm degree from the University of Calgary.
I came to a career in education after a rewarding year teaching English in Japan, followed by six years working as a math and science tutor at a small school in North Vancouver.
In 1999 I moved to Calgary and began my own math and science tutoring business. I get great satisfaction out of hearing that my students have passed their exams, but it’s the everyday “aha” moments, when I’ve helped a student understand a concept or learn a skill, that keep me doing this year after year.
I live with my wife, Victoria. She worked as a food scientist with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for 32 years and is now enjoying an early retirement. Her newfound freedom has allowed her to spend more time volunteering to support local art galleries and gardens.
I love travelling. We have been to South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Mexico, Costa Rica, and most of the European countries. I enjoy seeing live music, going to outdoor music festivals and experiencing live theatre.
When I’m not tutoring, I enjoy woodworking and DIY projects. In the winter, I snowboard and cross-country ski. In summer, I enjoy mountain biking, city biking, hiking and outdoor barbecues with my friends.
